Feed Ten Tips on Finding your Social Voice

May 30th, 2013
Edited by: vicki

Why should businesses use social media?

We could write a whole book on this subject, but for most businesses, it boils down to one thing: positive engagement with your audience, ultimately offering an additional route to conversion.

Yet, there are plenty of high profile examples of poor management of social media and we regularly see businesses damaging their brands through misuse or misunderstanding. With that in mind, here are our top ten tips to finding your social voice, abiding by social etiquette and creating a happy and profitable social niche.

1. Your professional and personal accounts are not the same

If you have a bad day and fancy a rant, your friends can judge this within the context of their relationship with you and their knowledge of your entire personality. Customers, who don’t know you personally, can’t. Instead, all they will see is a grumpy and ranty business owner which is a big turn off.

2. Stay on topic, stay appropriate

Remember even on Facebook you are still the official voice of your company. Remain professional, use courteous language and steer clear of inappropriate topics.

It seems so obvious and yet we regularly see small businesses expressing their personal opinions using confrontational, shouty* or negative language on their social media channels. This approach might incite comments and a superficial increase in on-page engagement – but will it increase conversion? Probably not.

[* 'shouting' is a term for one-sided, continuous announcement-style posts.]

3. Decide on your tone of voice and be consistent

As your social media audience grows increasingly your followers and fans will not know you personally. They will form their opinion of you, and thus your business, almost entirely from the content of your posts. So the question is, how do you want them to perceive your brand?

Decide on your tone of voice (i.e. upbeat and conversational or traditional and trustworthy) and your content strategy (i.e. business news and industry insights) and then remain consistent.

4. Set the ground rules and start planning

You’ve decided on your tone of voice and content strategy – but how will you deliver it in practice? For instance how will you react to negative customer feedback? Or introduce a new product or sales push?

Set some ground rules, put these in writing and develop a content plan. This will be particularly helpful if there are multiple staff members curating your social media channels.

5. Don’t spread yourself too thinly

According to a recent study the average person can only maintain two social accounts at one time – so choose wisely and don’t take on too much. Far better to have a strong and engaged presence on one channel, than to be patchy and unfocussed across three or four.

6. See beyond the Big Two

There is more to life than Facebook and Twitter and there is nothing wrong with choosing not to use either of the Big Two.

If you’re a very visual business, with access to your own product photography, Pinterest or Flickr might be a far better place to be. Meanwhile, for B2B services, leveraging Linkedin could be more appropriate.

7. Quality, not quantity

Quite possibly one of the aims of your business’ social media strategy is to increase sales? In which case it is not the quantity of fans and followers you have that matters, but the quality. Better 10 truly engaged followers who are likely to make purchases, than 1000 who won’t.

Blatant attempts to increase your number of followers is likely to turn people off. “Ten more likes and we’ll get to a hundred. Please share” is boring and smacks of desperation. Don’t do it! Instead think in terms of engagement, conversion and the viral effect of useful content.

8. Do not SPAM your followers and fans

On Facebook we would advise not posting more than a couple of times a week. More than that and you risk taking over your fans’ news feeds.

The ‘rules’ are different on Twitter and high-volume is far more acceptable, if not the norm – however make sure you spread out your tweets. There is nothing more annoying than a company that says nothing for days and then pushes out 20 tweets within the space of an hour.

9. Don’t be lazy – or a robot

There are services available that let you send a single post to multiple channels, or automate your posting. You may save a little time – but be wary. Your language should always be appropriate to the medium where it is appearing. There is no call for posting a #uselesshashtag to Facebook, and followers may spot a robotic post.

10. Brand your social niche

You are careful and consistent with your visual identity when it comes to your website and printed materials, so why not your social space? A professionally designed avatar graphic, Twitter background or Facebook cover image will reinforce your brand and give your social media channels a more polished look.

..and last but not least, have fun! It’s a great way to find out new topics, trends and to keep you in touch with your valuable customers. Listen as much as you speak and you’ll undoubtedly join the millions of users who find social media a valuable resource.

Feed Luxurious Leaflets for The Therapy Lounge

Marketing Leaflet for Downham Market Beauty SalonDownham Market’s favourite place to be pampered has to be The Therapy Lounge.

It offers a huge array of treatments from manicures to massage and spray tans to skin-care.

Whether it’s a facial or a full pamper package, a Therapy Lounge treatment is guaranteed to inject a little bit of luxury into your day.

They had been using black and white photo-copied price-lists to let customers know about all the services that they had on offer. However they came to Lingo wanting to upgrade to something glossy and full colour.

A communication piece that would tell customers more about their available services, all with that same feeling of ‘a little bit of luxury’.

We created this handbag sized ‘keep me’ booklet printed on a high quality, glossy paper stock. The slightly unusual square shape gives it a bit of extra oomph while the thicker paper stock will keep it looking lovelier for longer.

We were mindful to use The Therapy Lounge’s existing website branding, imagery and colour scheme to ensure a strong and consistent visual identity.

Feed Are we there yet? The Harrods Coaches holiday brochure arrives at Lingo

October 21st, 2012
Edited by: vicki

Brochures fresh from the printersAh, there’s nothing quite like the smell of paper and ink that greets you when you open a box of freshly printed brochures!

And this week the studio has been full of that aroma, as we took delivery of the Harrods Coaches 2013 Holiday Brochure.

We loved this project!

For the third year in a row, we began by contacting tourist boards, tourist attractions and hotels from every corner of the country to source photography.

This year our travel taste-buds were thoroughly tickled by some gorgeous scenic images of the Isle of Man, Cumbria, Wales and the South Coast amongst others.

We then put flesh on to the bare bones of each holiday itinerary, by researching extra details about the locations and side-trips involved.

And finally the text and imagery was kneaded and pummeled, by the lovely Sam, into the finished 24-page glossy brochure you see before you.

All in all a beautiful finished product of which we’re rather proud.

Now don’t get me wrong, we do love websites too, but you can’t sniff a website can you?!

Jenn making tea at Lingo studio

Jenn makes great tea.

It’s been a wonderful 2 years at Lingo with Jenn at the admin helm, but now it’s time to say farewell and good luck as Miss Clark heads off to pastures new.

The highlights would have to include the many, many  iTunes moments (from Gaudi’s bagpipes to the dubstep version of  ’Stop wait a minute Mr.Postman’ and many ‘happy’ song moments in-between) as well as the countless quick camera moments where I snap Jenn as she was about to devour a cake! (see the facebook page for a great cover photo!)

We’ll miss you Jenn, good luck in Colchester and in your future career – wherever you go, they’ll be lucky to have you.

Feed Introducing Lingo Sam

July 5th, 2012

Nearly a month in, and our new Senior Designer Sam Wells is settling into the studio!

So in honour of his three weeks here, here are three things we have learnt about him:

  • Like the tides, Sam’s coffee preferences shift throughout the day. Woe betide anyone who forgets and gives him a black coffee after noon or a white coffee in the morning*,
  • He’s even more of a petrol-head than Liz**, and
  • His design approach is cool and considered (rather like his nice line in shirts!)

The nature of agencies is that we work with lots of different clients, on lots of different projects, and the work is always varied and fast-paced.

Charmed Interiors Dennis the Menace BeddingSo in his first few weeks here Sam has been tapping into his inner Dennis the Menace to create a playful Beano themed summer ad campaign for Charmed Interiors.

(While resident dog Sally Spaniel helped the creative process by tapping into her inner Gnasher.)

Then jumping into the far more grown-up business of building and property maintenance, Sam designed and launched this new website for XL Scales.

Sam, you’re a great asset to the studio, and we’re so glad you’ve joined Team Lingo!***

Feed Fun in Sunny* Hunny at Lifestyles Festival

June 22nd, 2012
Edited by: vicki

If you’d been in Hunstanton over Jubilee weekend you might have spotted Liz, Vicki and Laura sporting some very fetching fluorescent orange polo shirts. No, we weren’t community sentence litter-pickers (where would you get an idea like that?!) we were volunteering at the thoroughly awesome Lifestyles Festival.

While the sun’s up Lifestyles brings together street sports like BMX, Parkour, Stakeboarding & Street Dance and water sports such as Kitesurfing, Windsurfing and SUP (Stand-Up Paddle Boarding). There are very few events with such a wide alternative sports offering, and the best thing is that both the general public and local schools are able to sign-up for free ‘have a go’ sessions.

Then, as the sun starts to set, the evenings slide into an eclectic music line up across two stages. Not forgetting one of the best VW ‘Show and Shines’ anywhere along the Norfolk Coast.

But enough of how brilliant it is, why were we there in our tangerine t-shirts?

Lifestyles Festival Brand Printed Materials

This year Lingo designed and maintained the festival website as well as designing the 24 page printed programme, posters and banner artwork. We also took on a larger stake in the event’s management, social media and sponsorship.

Lifestyles is a wonderful festival and thanks to West Norfolk & King’s Lynn Council, Hunstanton Sailing Club and a dedicated team of volunteers we hope the event will go on from strength to strength.

See you there next year?

*We won’t mention what the weather was doing on the Sunday. :(
